Foglia Center for Advanced Technology and Innovation
The Foglia Center for Advanced Technology and Innovation (CATI) at McHenry County College (MCC) aims to expand the understanding of what “manufacturing” really means for students and the public. The center will serve as a showcase for both old and new technologies, skills, and trades. Programs in welding, heating and cooling systems, industrial maintenance, engineering technology, construction management, artificial intelligence, metallurgy, and metrology will fill the classrooms and laboratories of the new center.
MCC’s bucolic campus has grown organically since its founding in 1967. The new center is located on the north-eastern edge of campus; nestled between greenhouses, an access road, and parking lots.
The building design evolved from the understanding that students who take courses at CATI will likely go on to work in a variety of manufacturing facilities. Using these types of buildings as inspiration, laboratories and classroom spaces are united under one “pavilion” roof.
The pavilion is organized into two bars, one for double-height laboratories and another for classrooms and support spaces. Stitching the program together is a series of catwalks and open informal collaboration spaces that weave through the building, between the classroom and labs, and back to campus.
The CATI will be a state-of-the-art facility where McHenry County residents will have access to equitable career and continuing education opportunities, in addition to being a beacon for excellence in teaching, learning, and training, and attracting and retaining a talented workforce for the innovative local manufacturing economy.

The program of the CATI presents unique environmental challenges and opportunities. Process loads associated with the teaching labs make energy consumption much higher than those of other types of facilities: 76 kBtu/sf is the median standard Energy Use Intensity (EUI) for office buildings, 571 kBtu/sf is the median EUI for teaching laboratories. Strategies such as high performance MEP systems, participating in an electrical utility demand response program, optimization of building envelope, and daylighting have been implemented to reduce the overall EUI to 365 kBtu/sf for the CATI. The project is targeting LEED Silver certification.
